The role of an air traffic controller ATC in the safety of aviation and air travel is undeniable. Becoming an air traffic controller requires dedication, continuous learning, and a commitment to safety. It’s a challenging but rewarding career that ensures the smooth and efficient movement of aircraft through our skies.
There are several steps on this journey;
First are the basic necessities such as having permanent residency or citizenship of the country where you’ll work, being 18 years or older and having at least a high school graduation degree. Having an undergraduate is often not mandatory but receiving a bachelor’s in aviation-related majors such as Aeronautical Science, Aviation Management or even a specialized major like Air Traffic Management is a great advantage. Of course prior knowledge through professional pilot’s training can also prepare candidates for this job.
The next step is passing a preliminary selection test held by the country’s civil aviation authority to assess their ability to multitask, make decisions, and handle stress. An example of this test is the AT-SAT test, the air traffic selection and training test administered by the FAA, which requires extensive studying.
Next, you’ll need to pursue the necessary education and training. Most countries have specialized training programs for aspiring air traffic controllers. These programs can be found at aviation academies, technical schools, or through the air traffic control authorities themselves. For example, in the US selected candidates attend the FAA Academy, where they’ll undergo intensive training that includes classroom and simulator instruction lasting 2-4 years depending on level/location.
After finishing this initial phase of training, aspiring air traffic controllers must apply for ATC job positions. These positions are often advertised by aviation authorities, airports, or air traffic control centers.
It’s during this work experience that you’ll to undergo further on-the-job training for 6-36 months and gain experience under the supervision of experienced air traffic controllers.
Once all training requirements are met, candidates will be awarded an air traffic controller license from their national regulatory body. Naturally, given the complexities of this job, taking periodic refresher courses are required to maintain licenses as equipment/procedures change over a controller’s career.
Over time, you could seek promotions to more complex sectors or pursue more specialized qualifications like Certified Professional Controllers rating.
