This year, the 2023 Dubai Airshow took place from 13th-17th November at DWC (Dubai World Central).
In this blog we will explore the highlights of the exhibition.
Boeing outperforms Airbus in the orders battle
Emirates ordered 15 Airbus A350-900 wide-bodied at the Dubai Airshow 2023, bringing the airline’s total commitment for the type to 65 aircraft. But this is not comparable to the success of their American rival at the exhibition; aside form Emirates’ order for 95 jets, Boeing also called press conferences with SunExpress, flyDubai, Royal Jordanian, and Royal Air Maroc. Ethiopian Airlines and Kazakhstan’s SCAT Airlines also announced orders from Boeing. In the end, Boeing received 214 firm orders for commercial aircrafts.
As well as the relatively smaller Emirates order, Airbus made deals with Ethopian Airlines for 11 additional Airbus A350-900s, EgyptAir (10 Airbus A350-900s), and airBaltic for 30 Airbus A220-300.
Emirate’s creates tension with Airbus and Rolls Royce
The president of UAE’s most prominent airline, ruled out a deal for the A350-1000 after signing a 52 billion dollar deal with Boeing. Tim Clark, the airline’s president, sparked the tension by publicly criticizing the Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engine— the exclusive engine option for the wide-body jet — calling it “defective” as he believes it needs to be removed for maintenance too frequently.
Later that same day, Rolls Royce’s chief customer officer responded to the comment by saying: “The engine works really well in what we call benign operations,” he told Reuters. “But in sandy, hot conditions it is challenged, as all modern engines are, because the temperatures are very high.”
Rolls-Royce UltraFan completes 100% SAF compatibility testing
On the sidelines of Dubai Airshow 2023, Rolls-Royce announced it has achieved a significant milestone by successfully running its UltraFan demonstrator to maximum power at its facility in Derby, UK.
The UltraFan demonstrator engine has a fan diameter of 140 inches (3.56 meters) making it the world’s largest aero-engine ever built. This company estimates that to reach Net Zero flying by 2050, a combination of highly-efficient, latest-generation gas turbines such as UltraFan operating on 100% SAF are likely to contribute around 80% of the total solution, which make this a great step in fighting the climate change and reducing the impacts of aviation industry on the environment.
A brief history of the Airshow
The Dubai Airshow started in 1989 and was established as a platform to grow the aviation and aerospace industries in the Middle East region. It began as a small biennial exhibition organized by Dubai’s Department of Civil Aviation. The first show in 1989 had around 60 exhibitors and a few thousand visitors; the goal was to showcase Dubai and the UAE’s growing aviation sector and capitalize on the region’s strategic geographic location between East and West.
Over time, it grew substantially in size and stature to become a premier international aerospace exhibition. Major plane manufacturers and airlines began participating regularly. The year 1993 marked a turning point when military aircraft displays and demonstrations were added, drawing more global defense companies. By the late 1990s, it had firmly established itself as the region’s largest and most important aviation and aerospace event. Visitor numbers surpassed 20,000.
After 2000, additional exhibition space was built at Dubai World Central (now Al Maktoum International Airport) to accommodate the show’s steady expansion.
Today it occupies over 100,000 square meters of space and is one of the top three aviation trade events globally, achieving its founders’ goal of putting Dubai on the aerospace map.
