20-year Airbus and Boeing markets

Comparison of 20-year forecasts for the global Airbus and Boeing markets

Air travel has seen a significant increase in the past two years. After the recession caused by the pandemic, airlines have been on a path to recovery, with some of them already emerging from the downturn.

Most airlines have reached pre-pandemic levels, and some have experienced even greater growth in capacity and demand compared to 2019. Most of the grounded aircraft during the pandemic have returned to service and are meeting passenger demand. Airlines are also expanding their route networks and fleets for further growth.

To meet the increasing passenger demand, newer and more efficient aircraft are needed. In the past two years, aircraft manufacturers such as Airbus and Boeing have seen an increase in orders and record-breaking numbers for new aircraft.

In recent months, both aerospace giants have predicted the need for new aircraft in the next 20 years. The global market forecasts for these two companies between 2023 and 2042 are as follows:

Airbus Global Market Forecast

Airbus predicts a demand for 40,850 new passenger and cargo aircraft in the next 20 years. These aircraft will either replace older aircraft in the market or be added to the existing global fleet. Airbus indicates that 32,630 aircraft (80% of new aircraft) will be single-aisle jets, while 8,220 (20%) will be wide-body aircraft.

The Asia-Pacific region and China will have the highest demand for new aircraft in the next two decades. These two regions will account for over 46% (approximately 19,000) of the new aircraft. Europe and North America will each have close to 20% demand for new aircraft. Latin America and Africa are growing markets and will experience unprecedented fleet growth in the future.

The Middle East will require nearly 10% of new aircraft. Interestingly, new aircraft in the Middle East will include both single-aisle and wide-body aircraft in equal proportions.

Boeing Commercial Market Outlook

Boeing’s 2023 Commercial Market Outlook shows a need for 42,595 aircraft in the next 20 years. Boeing states that global passenger traffic has almost recovered from the pandemic-related recession.

While supply chain issues and labor shortages still exist, airlines worldwide see tremendous growth potential in the future. Consequently, the need for new narrow-body and wide-body aircraft is increasing.

According to Boeing, over 80% of the fleet growth in the narrow-body segment (76% single-aisle, 4% regional jets) will occur. Nearly 18% will be wide-body aircraft, and the remaining 2% will be freighter aircraft.

Additionally, India and China will lead the growth in air travel in the coming years. Boeing believes that less than 25% of the active global fleet in 2042 will be preserved. The remaining 75% will be replaced with next-generation aircraft.
